MODULE 1

Module 1 of the Safer Drivers Course is a 3 hour interactive workshop facilitated by an experienced and qualified teacher from BTW.  All BTW facilitators have been carefully selected for their teaching ability and MUST have completed the Safer Drivers Course Facilitator Course.

MODULE 2

Module 2 of the Safer Drivers Course is a 2 hour practical coaching session led by an experienced driving instructor who is also qualified as a car coach for the Safer Drivers Course program. The session includes 2 Learner drivers with a driver trainer. Each Learner will drive 3 times, alternatively with the other Learner driver, over the 2 hour session. The trainer will then drive the very last part of the session, to demonstrate and show low risk driving in action by verbalising their observations, perceptions and behaviours. The Module 2 route for each area has been specifically designed by BTW to assist Learners to practice in varying conditions.

WHAT WILL I LEARN in the SDC Course?

  • Decision Making: The ability to look and gather information to make good decisions when driving.
  • Safe Driving Strategies: That low risk driving strategies support safer driving and can help to prevent involvement in a crash. The strategies discussed will include safe following distance, crash avoidance space, speed management, hazard perception, gap selection and decision making.
  • Identifying and avoiding risks: Increasing the Learner driver awareness of risks that can affect their driving and how they can control some of the risks associated with being a Provisional driver.
  • Challenges as a new driver: Learner drivers becoming aware of what challenges they will face as a Provisional driver and how they can manage those challenges to stay safe on our roads.
  • Behavioural factors contributing to accidents: Discussion on what contributes to a crash. In particular the behavioural factors especially for young drivers.

The course is FREE if you hold a current Pension or Healthcare Card.  Please advise at the time of your booking if you have hold either of these Concession Cards.

You must have completed a minimum of 50 actual driving hours and this must not include any additional credits for professional lessons.

We only complete the practical session in our dual controlled driving school cars.

Yes Module 1 must be completed before you can complete Module 2. Both Modules can be completed in the 1 day. Module 2 at the latest must be completed within 1 month of having completed Module1.

The BTW instructors teach the same skills and techniques as you will learn in the Safer Drivers Course. The Safer Drivers Course is not about learning to drive (hence the requirement to already have 50 logged hours before attending the course) but helping the Learner to strategise as to how to be a more safe driver, with an emphasis on being unsupervised and making decisions when they become a Provisional licence holder.

We do not provide manual cars for this Module. All of our Module 2 driving instructors are qualified driving instructors.  For this particular course we only use automatic vehicles, so that students can concentrate completely on the course content and don't need to worry about gear changes, clutch control etc.

No, there is no final exam or assessment. We encourage that all students participate and engage in the course.

If you are attending the course with friends, please let BTW know and we will try and schedule your drive with a nominated friend.

A standard lesson is tailored to the needs of the student.  At the commencement of the lesson, the instructor will discuss with you where you think you are at as a Learner driver, what things you would like to learn, what you do well and what you feel you need assistance with.  Your instructor will then be able to identify any deficiencies/weaknesses and also reinforce any positive abilities that you have.  Lessons can include such things as hazard perception and response, headchecks, speed management, gap selection, strategies to assist in reading the conditions when driving, along with learning to park and other manoeuvres.

You should go for your P's when you feel that you are ready to do so.  You must have held your Learner licence for a minimum of 12 months, must have completed at least 120 hours of logged driving, which includes at least 20 hours of night driving.  You must have a supervising driving sign off all 20 competencies at the front of the logbook to confirm you are proficient in all the skills required to be an unsupervised driver.  All Learners develop in their own time and after a lesson with BTW we can give you feedback on your driving and the best way forward with lessons to result in you receiving your Provisional license.
