Getting your provisional licence is one of the biggest milestones for any young Australian. But in New South Wales, the road to your red Ps requires clocking up 120 hours of supervised driving (including 20 hours of night driving).
Between school, study, sport, part-time work and family commitments, tracking every drive and trying to calculate how much further you have to go can feel overwhelming for both learners and supervising parents.
To take the guesswork out of the process, the team at Behind The Wheel has created a brand new, free tool: our Logbook Calculator.
What is the Logbook Calculator?
Whether you record your trips in a physical paper logbook or through the official Roundtrip app, our calculator helps you instantly see where you stand and maps out the quickest, safest route to reaching your 120 hours.
In just a few seconds, you can enter your current hours and see:
- Exactly how many daytime and night hours remain
- How much time you can wipe off your logbook through accredited training
- When you become eligible for key milestones like the Safer Drivers Course
How to Cut Up to 50 Hours Off Your Logbook
Many learner drivers and parents do not realise that the logbook journey does not have to mean 120 individual hours behind the wheel. Through approved Transport for NSW programs, you can legitimately fast-track up to 50 hours of your total:
1. The 3-for-1 Professional Lesson Bonus (Up to 30 Hours)
Every 1-hour driving lesson with an accredited instructor counts as 3 hours in your logbook, for up to 10 hours of lessons. That means completing 10 professional lessons gives you 30 hours of logbook credit while teaching you foundational low-risk driving habits right from the start.
2. The NSW Safer Drivers Course (20 Hours in One Go)
Once you reach 50 actual on-road driving hours (including at least 10 hours of night driving), you unlock the Transport for NSW Safer Drivers Course.
(Note: The 50 hours must be actual driving time on the road; 3-for-1 lesson bonus hours cannot be used to meet this entry threshold).
This 5-hour course consists of:
- Module 1: A 3-hour interactive group workshop focusing on low-risk driving behaviours, hazard awareness and speed management
- Module 2: A 2-hour practical in-car coaching session with two students and a coach to put theory into practice
Upon completing both modules, you receive an instant 20-hour credit in your logbook. Because the course credits daytime hours, having your first 10 night hours already banked means you are already halfway to fulfilling your 20 mandatory night hours as well.
